webmaster today typically performs many tasks a customer needs not only
for the website itself, but marketing, SEO, Support, and sometimes
Training.
Skills a typical webmaster SHOULD be proficient at getting done may include: - Laying out the site for the overal Look and Feel the site needs for the clients needs
- Graphic Designs custom designed and artistic use of Clipart/Photos/ and Word Art
- Programming knowledge in such things as HTML (of course), PHP, SQL, Java, Ajax, PERL
- Knowledge
of Web Server systems where the site will be hosted - does little good
to spend days/weeks/months designing a site if the site is NOT going to
work on the clients web server (or shared hosting account)
- Good Knowledge of Email servers/systems
- They should have access to LIST your new site at other locally targeted portals/classifieds sites, etc
- They should have Good knowledge of search engine requirements to get your site listed properly within them
- And they should be easy to talk to when you need some expert advice/support
All in all these things require about the same Skill and expertise levels as any licensed Doctor or Lawyer.
If
you decide your business wants Cheap Bottom line pricing for your
business site by having a Friend or family member do your site for you,
you will get what you are paying for unless of course they are specialy
trained in all the above principles.
The thing is, you CAN opt
to have a mimimal web site created and setup for your needs TODAY and
pay very little for it TODAY, but; tommorrow when you feel it is time
to move on up to something more robust (and what you are really
wanting) your site will have to be TOTALLY Re Done most likely.
Traffic
you may be getting today at your minimal site can still remain pretty
much the same and greatly increase with a New Site, however all those
pages will need to be added on (and will cost you MORE).
In the
end making a good decision early on to get a website type that will
GROW as your business grows as it already contains the
features/services/and systems in place is a wise decision from the
onset.
